The terms in brief

Trim size
The size after cutting, which is what ends up in your customer’s hand.
Document size
Trim size plus bleed on all four sides. This is how big your print file must be.

How big is A4 with 3 mm bleed?

216 × 303 mm.

How big is a business card with bleed?

For 85 × 55 mm with 3 mm bleed, 91 × 61 mm.

How much safe margin do I need?

At least 3 mm, better 4 to 5 mm inwards from the trim line.
