Stood on its short edge, a 4A0 sheet is taller than an internal door. Hardly anyone needs it, but it follows the same rules as every other A size: cut it in half and you get 2A0, cut it again and you have A0 with exactly one square metre.
Where 4A0 comes from
You will not find 4A0 in the main table of ISO 216. It comes from the German standard DIN 476, which names sizes above A0 with a number in front: 2A0 is twice and 4A0 four times the size of A0. ISO 216 only mentions both in a note as rarely used sizes that belong to the same series.

4A0 in pixels
| Resolution | Pixels | Megapixels | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 72 dpi | 4768 × 6741 px | 32.1 MP | Screen, preview |
| 96 dpi | 6357 × 8988 px | 57.1 MP | Screen (Windows default) |
| 150 dpi | 9933 × 14,043 px | 139.5 MP | Large format, posters seen from a distance |
| 300 dpi | 19,866 × 28,087 px | 558 MP | Offset and digital print |
At 300 dpi a 4A0 poster would need 19,866 × 28,087 pixels, around 558 megapixels. Nobody needs that in practice. A print this large is seen from several metres away, where 100 to 150 dpi is plenty. At 150 dpi it is 9933 × 14,043 pixels. How viewing distance and resolution relate is explained under resolution and dpi.
Printing 4A0
Very few printers can produce 4A0 in one piece. The short side is 1682 mm, while large-format printers in offices and copy shops usually take rolls of 914 mm (36 in), 1118 mm (44 in) or 1524 mm (60 in). Even a 64 in roll at 1626 mm is more than 5 cm too narrow. That leaves two options:
- A wider machine: printers who produce banners and exhibition walls work with much wider rolls.
- Tiling: 4A0 is exactly four A0 sheets in a 2 × 2 grid. Each tile gets a few centimetres of overlap and is joined on the wall.
For posters this size many printers ask for more than the usual 3 mm of bleed. Check with them before you set up the file.
4A0 and outdoor posters
In the UK, outdoor posters are measured in sheets rather than A sizes. A 6-sheet poster at a bus shelter is 1200 × 1800 mm, about the size of 2A0. A 48-sheet billboard measures 6096 × 3048 mm, far larger than 4A0. More on poster sizes in the poster sizes guide.
