D5 between A5 and B6
D5 is the geometric mean of A5 (148 × 210 mm) and B6 (125 × 176 mm). Its sides are about 8 % shorter than those of A5, and its area is 84 % of A5. The step from D5 up to A5 is the same as the step from A5 up to C5.
Cutting D5 from A5
You cannot buy D5 paper ready-made. The easiest way is to trim an A5 sheet: 12 mm off the width and 18 mm off the height. A paper trimmer does it in two cuts.
D5 and the DVD case
The match is a coincidence, DVD cases do not follow any paper size. It does show how close the D series comes to things we handle every day. The inserts behind the clear sleeve are much larger than D5, by the way, because they wrap around the spine and the back. A C5 or B5 envelope takes D5 flat.
