D9 between A9 and B10
D9 is the geometric mean of A9 (37 × 52 mm) and B10 (31 × 44 mm). Its sides are about 8 % shorter than those of A9, and its area is 85 % of A9. The step from D9 up to A9 is the same as the step from A9 up to C9.
Cutting D9 from A9
You cannot buy D9 paper ready-made. The easiest way is to trim an A9 sheet: 3 mm off the width and 4 mm off the height. With pieces this small, a craft knife, a steel ruler and a cutting mat are more accurate than scissors.
D9 and the passport photo
D9 still will not do for a real passport photo. Authorities ask for exactly 35 × 45 mm, and D9 is too narrow. For small photos on club cards, in albums or on name badges it is a handy size, though.
How many D9 pieces fit on a sheet?
| Sheet | Without bleed | With 3 mm bleed and 5 mm margin |

| A3 (297 × 420 mm) | 72 | 50 |
