C1 is half of C0 and made for A1. An A1 drawing at 594 × 841 mm has 27 mm to spare on each side and 38 mm at the top and bottom of a C1 sleeve. That is enough to slide it in without creasing and tight enough that it does not slip around when carried.

C1 envelopes are rare, because hardly anyone posts A1 flat. For drawings, posters and plans in A1 there are three usual options:
- Flat in an art portfolio with an inside size close to C1, ideal for presentations and applications to art and design schools
- Rolled in a postal tube at least 65 cm long if the sheet is rolled along its short side
- Folded to A4 following DIN 824, the usual way to file technical drawings
